You may need to take IELTS again to meet new requirements, achieve new goals or improve your score. Read on to find out when you might need to take the test again and what options are available.
When do I need to take IELTS again?
You need a different IELTS score or test type
You may be applying to a new university, employer, or visa programme with different requirements from when you originally took the test. Some organisations need higher scores or a different test, such as IELTS General Training instead of Academic.
Your IELTS results have expired
IELTS scores are valid for two years from your test date. If you are submitting new applications that require you to prove your English level, more than two years since you took the IELTS test, you will need to take IELTS again.
You need a better IELTS score
If you didn't get the result you need in one skill, you have the option to take an IELTS One Skill Retake. But if you need to improve your score across more than one skill to pursue your plans, you will need to take the IELTS test again.

Returning to IELTS: FAQs
Yes, you can take IELTS as many times as you need, subject to a fee each time.
Your new institution will only see the Test Report Form (TRF) that you request us to share, or you share yourself.
If you want to query your results or have a section re-marked, you can submit an Enquiry on Results (EOR) request up to six weeks after your test. You can do this online through the Test Taker Portal or at the centre where you took your test. You will pay a fee to have one or more sections re-marked, but this will be refunded if your score increases in any section of the test. The outcome of your EOR may be available on the same day as your application or up to 21 days afterwards. The time depends on several factors, including the number of sections you asked us to re-mark.
You can take One Skill Retake if you recently took a full IELTS on computer test at a participating centre. You must book One Skill Retake within 60 days of your original test date. Check the Test Taker Portal to see if you are eligible based on your test date and location.
