IELTS Academic Speaking Practice Tests

Prepare for your IELTS Academic Speaking test with free practice tests from the British Council. Become familiar with the test format, practise different question types and build confidence before test day.

Preparing for your IELTS Speaking test

We want you to feel confident speaking on test day. The IELTS Speaking test is the same for both Academic and General Training candidates, and these official sample materials will help you understand exactly what to expect.

The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner and has three parts: an introduction and interview, a short talk on a topic, and a longer two-way discussion. Use these official practice materials to:

  • get familiar with the Speaking test format and what each part involves
  • hear examples of the kinds of topics and questions you may be asked
  • understand how responses are assessed across fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation
  • build confidence by practising under realistic conditions.

Speaking (11–14 minutes)

In the Speaking test, you have a discussion with a certified examiner. It is interactive and as close to a real-life situation as a test can get.

There are three parts to the test and each part fulfils a specific function in terms of interaction pattern, task input and test taker output.

Speaking sample tasks

In Part 1, you answer questions about yourself and your family. In Part 2, you speak about a topic. In Part 3, you have a longer discussion on the topic.

The Speaking test is the same for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Each of the three parts is designed to test a different aspect of your communication ability.
