How do the IELTS Vs C1 Advanced test formats compare?

Both tests assess Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking skills, but there are differences in how they are tested. Our evaluation here uses IELTS Academic, which is more comparable to C1 Advanced.

Both tests use a relevant range of contexts

Both tests have four parts, which include audio recordings of conversations and monologues in social and academic situations.

You will come across similar task types in both tests, and scoring is based on your ability to pick up ideas and factual details, and recognise opinions, tone and purpose.

IELTS tests put more focus on academic skills

C1 Advanced has a longer ‘Reading and Use of English’ section with eight tasks (90 mins), compared to three in IELTS (60 mins).

The texts used in IELTS Academic are focused on texts you are likely to come across in academic settings, while in the C1 Advanced test you may also come across fiction.

Academic writing skills a focus for both tests

As with the Reading section, C1 Advanced Writing is longer (90 mins) than IELTS Academic (60 mins). Both tests have two Writing tasks.

IELTS Academic offers a practical measure of your readiness for university study, while C1 Advanced requires highly proficient advanced writing skills.

Go for IELTS if you prefer a one-to-one approach

In IELTS Speaking, you will carry out three tasks one-to-one with an examiner. For C1 Advanced, you’ll be required to sit the test with at least one other candidate and the two examiners in the room.

IELTS Academic shows universities how well you can communicate on your own in real academic situations.
