What is the IELTS test format?
IELTS assesses four key language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. To communicate effectively in English, you will need to use all four skills with accuracy and confidence.
Tests how well you understand spoken English. You’ll listen to audio files and answer questions to show you can follow information, ideas and opinions
Assesses your English reading skills. You’ll read some texts and will need to show you can find information, follow main ideas and recognise opinions
Assesses how well you can write in English. You’ll complete two writing tasks to show how you can present ideas, support arguments and organise text
Tests your spoken English in conversation with an examiner. You’ll need to share opinions, talk about experiences and give everyday information
What is the IELTS test procedure?
The test takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes: Listening (30 min), Reading (60 min), Writing (60 min) and Speaking (11-14 min).
The Speaking test may take place on the same day or within 7 days of the rest of your test.
How to take the IELTS test

How is IELTS scored?
IELTS uses a band scoring system from 0 (non-user) to 9 (expert user). On the Test Report Form (TRF), the four language skills are individually scored and then averaged to give an overall band score.

You can take your IELTS test at one of over 1,600 locations in more than 140 countries. This may be at a British Council test centre or at one of our hundreds of partner sites around the world. Visit our booking portal to check availability at your local test centre.
IELTS for UKVI tests must be taken at a UK Home Office-approved IELTS for UKVI location.
The IELTS test takes about 2 hours and 45 mins: Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) and Speaking (11-14 minutes). If you take IELTS on paper, you will have an additional 10 minutes at the end of the Listening section to transfer your answers from the question booklet to the answer sheet.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a test of your English skills for study, work or living abroad.
If you're planning to study at a university that teaches its courses in English, or plan to make a professional registration in an English-speaking country, you'll need to take IELTS Academic test.
If you're planning to work or train in an English-speaking country, you'll need to take the IELTS General Training test. You will need to take this test to migrate to Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the UK.
If you're planning to apply for a UK visa or study a course below degree level in the UK, you'll need to take an IELTS for UKVI test.

You can access your results online through the British Council’s Test Taker Portal for IELTS on Computer. For IELTS on paper, you can collect your certificate from your test venue.
