Preparing for your IELTS General Training Writing test

We want you to go into your test with confidence. Below you'll find official sample materials for the IELTS General Training Writing test — which is structured differently from the Academic Writing test.

In General Training Writing, Task 1 asks you to write a letter in response to a given situation, while Task 2 is an essay on a topic of general interest. These official practice materials will help you:

  • understand the General Training Writing test format and the requirements of each task
  • practise writing formal, semi-formal, and informal letters for Task 1
  • develop your essay-writing skills for a wide range of General Training topics

General Training Writing Sample tasks

In Part 1, you are asked to respond to a situation by writing a letter, for example, requesting information or explaining a situation.

In Part 2, you are asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.

The General Training Writing test consists of two writing tasks of 150 words and 250 words.

In Task 1, test takers are asked to respond to a situation by writing a letter, for example, requesting information or explaining a situation.
